Why Do We Sink This Low?

Let me tell you a very interesting albeit true story. There is large family whose one son is not very happy with the life they lead and wants to earn big bucks. So he goes and finds a job with a rich family who treat him like dirt but our guy is happy making his moolah. One day the rich family accuses him of a heinous crime and almost persecute him. The guy's family back home stands by him and goes all out to get him freed. After raising a lot of dust they manage to free him and get him back home. The father and neighbours go all out to make him feel comfortable and even go ahead and promise him a job.

You think the story ends on a happy note here? No. The boy goes begging back to the rich family to adopt him since he has been proved innocent. The rich snooty family looks at him like he is some loony (which I have no doubt of) and simply throws him out.

You must be thinking, "Who could ever be such a moron?" Well, we are. Atleast it looks like we are being ruled by some. First we go and make a hero out of a terror suspect. Then we go all out to bail him and give him a royal welcome. This notwithstanding our honourable chief minister offer's him a job!

The terror suspect rejects the offer and goes on to beg the Australian government for a honarary citizenship which they plainly reject.

"I won't be doing that," Howard was quoted by a local TV network.
There is no case for that to occur and I'm not sure that we have honorary Australians anyway, but he wouldn't be the sort of person you'd make an honorary Australian," he said.

But I'm not aware that there is such an animal, such a person, such a beast. I don't think so, I don't think we have honorary Australians, do we?

Sheesh! What is the need for our government & media to suck up to Haneef & family like this?
Am I the only one getting genuinely troubled by all this?

I completely agree with you. As far as the government sucking up to Haneef goes, I think they just want to avoid a riot in the otherwise peaceful bangalore, where these days people are ready to hit the roads in groups for no reason also.

When he came back, and got the backing of his country and community he wanted Australia to apologise for their actions, and now he wants to go back.

You are not the only one seething....just goes to show that the media and government is run by a bunch of jokers..

Just to take a contrary view....

Haneef never wanted any felicitation from Indian Govt. Yes, his wife did make a plea to the Government to help , which is pretty normal thing to do. Governments all over the world are expected to help their "innocent" citizens in trouble.

It was plain fact that Haneef, like zillion other Indians preffered the prosperity of the West to practice his noble profession. But that is what Zillion others do...so why blame him.

It is our media and the Govt which played upto the media to be blamed.
Why does our Media and Govt go overbard in terming someone as a hero so soon ? And they dont felicitate the daily heroes who grind it out.

What wrong did Haneef do ? he just like others wanted to enjoy the good things of the west. So if Haneef is wrong, then what about the rich Bay Area techies of Indian Origin, even they have taken up American Citizenships.

Let us not try to take a high moral ground here.

Precisely what I have said. If you read my post again you will notice that I had questioned the antics of our government and media only.

However I will not agree with you when you compare Haneef with the zillions of his other indian counterparts. He is yet a terror suspect and his name is yet to be cleared completely.

We have this classic situation in India of terming someone guilty without any trial (trial by the media)...we do that always in all high profile cases.
U seem to be well informed...i dont need to quote the cases.
Remember the first law of any jusicial system is "Innocent till proven otherwise"

So if you agree with the above, how can Haneef be any different from the others in the queue to get a US citizenship.

To jog our collective memories here…there was a bomb attack!. If there’s really cause to suspect someone of involvement in or knowledge of a terrorist plot, it’s entirely reasonable to investigate.

Since there was lack of evidence they left him go free. While this doesn’t prove him to be implicated in the case, it’s worthy to note that the Australian authorities have not yet given him a clean chit. So his jumping the gun and asking for “honorary citizenship”.. isn't this preposterous?

I agree. the case is far from closed - there are incriminating chat inscripts and his reason to leave Australia on a one way ticket are not entirely convincing.

This is precisely "Conviction in Media"...guys...if there was conclusive evidence u think the Australian Govt is charitable enough in a election yr to leave him scott free.

the point is "Innocent till proven guilty" and not contra...

personally I wouldnt hv begged Australian govt for a citizenship.
