Vijay Times Publishes My Article on Stray Dogs
Vijay Times (part of the Times Group) and a local daily in Bangalore published my article "Straying Thoughts on Stray Dogs". It appeared on Page 04 of their supplement called VT Life on Sunday March 11, 2007.
It's a bit of a thrill to see one's name in print, even if it doesn't result in more traffic to the blog. :D

Good article, though i wouldnt agree with the content. We have no right to kill animals because we fear them. Imagine a parallel, can we kill all snakes, rats, lizards, frogs, canines, cats, elephants, tigers, lions, leapords because we dread them.
My kid fears people who are drunk on the street, eunuchs and men with beard ? Can i recomend killing them.
Your fear of the animal is personal to you and it is because of your conditioning. We cant blame the animal for it.
Man and animals have always crossed paths since time immemorial. Stray incident have happenend. Recently in kerala a mahout was lkilled by the elephant. Is the solution to kill the elephant justified ?
We hv taken the easy approach of eliminating the animals from our path. See where we are today. Human greed has ensured that we are living in a lonely planet where the most dangerous animal is US. Most killings thesedays are people driven. Can we now start eliminating US.

As for your child fearing bearded men, I would say your argument is flawed. Its not about baseless fears but about children who have actually been attacked and killed by a pack of strays.
Why isn't anyone thinking about the parents who lost their little son?
U R right...in the same breath, many many more kids have been unfortunately killed by Humans...what about that ?
Invading human space...do we own the entire planet ? What is the limit of our boundary. What %age of land have ewe left for the animals.
Noah must be turning in his grave. he bouth all animals to live with humans.
So what do you say is the way out of this issue? Neutering, you say? But that hasn't worked all these years too. Despite CUPA & PETA's years of effort. It hasn't worked even for countries like Ireland, Greece and many other countries. Why? For one, it is a huge mammoth task and secondly quite expensive too. Yes, expensive it is for a government that does not even provide basic infrastructure to the so-called silicon city of India. I am sure no such program will find the adequate funds.
Honestly am not advocating the culling of these stray dogs, but for any viable alternative it seems to be the only option.
Or do we ignore the whole problem since its just a child, once in a while?
No point hiding behind stats. in India we are desparate for a image changeover form the land of snake charmer image.
ABC (Animal Birth Control) is definitely a humane and civilised way of tacking this issue.
This has to be coupled with certain basic civic behaviour (which we utterly lack in India).
Have you observed where and how the strays feed themselves. Remember to survive they need food. And this food is provided to them by us. We dump garbage int he open.
I find so many int he neighbourhood feeding the strays. I am not against this, but take additional responsibility of getting them neutered and vaccinate them.
My sympathies lie with the parents of the child , there is no doubt on that. But a knee jerk reaciton wont take us to the solution.
